2006 at the finish line
A lot to get caught up on here before
we start a new running season ... and all of it much
overdue!
IRA Annual General Meeting
of November 18th
- Pauline
Hill and Dan Kunzelman have stepped down as president and treasurer.
Big thanks for their time and commitment in keeping this organization
running smoothly over the past three years. (And a note that Pauline
is now using her maiden name, Ulatowski.)
- Jarrett Spannier and Sherry Maligaspe
have accepted the roles of president and treasurer for 2007. The
remainder of the executive remains
the same.
- Wendy Schroeder and Jarrett Spannier
were chosen as the 2006 Runner's of the Year. Larry Campbell was
awarded the Heinrich Spiller Award of Courage.
- After a one year trial, the road
series, will now officially include age-graded results and scoring.
The overall series male and female age-graded winners will be recognized
with a trophy that will awarded annually and engraved with the recipients
name. It is proposed that these awards will be named after Willis
Greenaway and Heidi Muckle to honour their long time commitment
to the sport and involvement in the road series. (Congratulations
also, to the 2006 trial version age-graded series winners, Peter
Pollhammer and Lynda Proce.)
- The 2007
race schedule was finalized. The Summerland Centennial Half
was added as a 13th race is the series and will be held on the last
Sunday in February each year - in between the Starting Block and
Lakeside 5k. The Rivers Spring Run Off and the Bike Barn (now) 10K
will be held on new courses for 2007.
Updated results
The 2006 Results
link
has been updated to include
the 2006 award
winners. The Series Participation
table has been updated
to include the past year. And from the amalgamation of results necessary
to put that table together it is not too difficult to come up with
other statistics regarding annual
race numbers and the like for anyone interested.
2007 Wish List
Bill Stephens,
the long time president of the this association, has race results
for all the series races dating back to 1983. These results are
paper copies only and my hope is to get these results into the web
page archive, originally by posting scanned copies, and perhaps
finding the time (and or volunteers?) to enter the data digitally.
The Starting Block 10K is only
42 days away ... out with the old and in with the new! Best wishes
to all, in attaining your 2007 goals!

Results for the Peak
to Beak have been posted.
A beaut of a day provided ideal
conditions for the 99 runners who took part in the last race of
this years series, on what is certainly the most diverse course
of the entire series. Kelowna's Trevor Haaheim, took first overall,
for the third time in the last four years, with a time of 1:03:39.
Trevor Jordon of Vernon ran second in 1:04:06. Greg Johnson of Vernon
finished third in 1:07:34. In the women's division Penticton's Stephanie
Grahame prevailed with a seven second lead over Caroline Raine of
Kelowna to take first place in a time of 1:22:41. Lorraine Lees
of Kelowna ran third in 1:23:24.
Thanks to the Kelowna Running
Club, the volunteers and the sponsors.
Congratulations to this years Iron Leg
winners for completing all twelve road races. Topping that list
is Mel Doherty, the ironman of series racers, who
has now competed in 164 consecutive
series races. The other winners are John Chisholm, Kathryne Flannery,
Cindy Gamme, Dan Kunzelman, Bill Spill and Darlene Wood.
The Cross Country Series begins
Oct 1st in Salmon Arm. See the 2006 Race Schedule
link for more info. Entry forms for the trail
series will be posted as soon as they are received. (Sept 25th,
20:26 update. That statement about trail entry forms isn't correct.
The XC series is done with day of race registration only and there
won't be any forms or other info posted. If you have questions about
the race, email or phone the race director listed in the schedule.
[Although, I did do a map and entry form for the Summerland XC,
last year and I will post that once I update it]).

Pounder bus to Portland
Marathon
This may be of interest to anyone
looking for transportation to the Portland Marathon.
The Penticton Pounders have secured a bus
and hotel rooms for the the Portland Marathon on Oct.1. There
are eleven seats left on the bus and these are available at $99
per person to anyone interested. We have 36 signed up already,
4 from the Kamloops club. You don't have to be a runner to be on
the bus but runners have priority so you can take
your partner and they can shop ... dangerous,
no sales tax in Oregon! The room rate is $79 and the rooms
have two beds so you can share. Book ASAP
as the rate on rooms goes up to $119. We would love to have you
come along. Contact Ellis Andrews (ellisandsusan@shaw.ca
490-3347) or Deb Dunham (drdunham@shaw.ca
492-3905). We have just placed a call and may be
able to get a few days extension on the room booking at $79.

Bike Barn 12K results
Results for the Bike
Barn 12K have been posted.
Fourteenth overall 2006 Ironman Canada finisher,
Olly Piggin, of Penticton bested Vernon's Trevor Jordan and Greg
Johnson to take first place in a time of 42:03. In the women's division,
Caroline Raine, of Kelowna, was first across the line in a time
of 52:13. Kelowna's Shannon Thompson took second in 55:58 and Deb
Lougheed of Penticton was third in 58:32.
A couple of runners with notable
runs to mention. Doreen Barr (F70-79) ran this race in 1999 in a
time of 1:11:44. In 2002 she had a time of 1:09:03. This year she
finished in 1:09:12! Quite inspirational I'd say. Also Brian Macdonald
(M60-64), (who has been shedding more than just a few pounds lately),
had a 1:25:28 clocking in 2004, and struggled with a bum knee to
finish in 1:56:34 last year, crossed the line in 1:19:38 this year!
Age-graded Bike Barn results are
also available with the 2006
Age-Graded Results link
to the left. The age-graded scoring has also been updated AG
11 Race Women , AG
11 Race Men If you're a runner old enough to have an age-grade
factor you likely give age-grading a thumbs up. If you're a younger
runner you may not appreciate it now but you will one day! Congratulations
to Doreen Barr and Rory Switzer for their first place Bike Barn
age-graded finishes.
The final race of the road
series, the Peak to Beak
goes Sunday, Sept 24th in Kelowna.
And you can tune up for that one by entering a Terry
Fox Run in your area on Sept 17th. If you can't participate
you can also make a pledge online. At the least, stop and reflect
on what that gutsy kid went through in running a total of 5,373
km over 143 days, the equivalent of a marathon every day! Our ultimate
inspirational runner!

Age-Graded Scoring
Age-grading
has been completed for the ten 2006 races to date,
as well as all of the
2005 races. Points have been awarded for each age- graded race result,
in the same manner that points are awarded in the age categorized
results. These points have been totaled to come up with an age graded
series score for each year.

2005

Age-graded series scoring men
This year age-grading has been done as a
trial. with the intent of adding it as a competitive award event
in future years, providing the results could
be calculated in a timely manner. The first three races were age-graded
manually which was too time consuming. Thanks to Peter Pollhammer
we now have a program to calculate the results.
The individual age-graded results for 2005, 2006, can be found with
the links to the upper left. The previous, manually compiled results,
have been removed from the site.

Raven Run Age Graded Results
Peter Pollhammer has devised an
age grading program. All the races have now been age graded and
will be posted when time permits. The program uses actual ages where
the birth date is known. Otherwise, an asterisk indicates that the
median of the age category was used. Age graded series scoring will
be posted at a later date. Raven results only for now.

My pick for the toughest series
race. If you've never run this race perhaps you've played Snakes
and Ladders?!!
Trevor Jordon of Vernon took first
overall, while setting a course age category record, (M40-44) with
a time of 36:19. Greg Johnson also of Vernon, ran a close second
and picked up his fifth age category (M30-34) series win finishing
in 36:42. Andrew Sellars, (more Vernon) was third in 37:12.
In the women's division, youth prevailed.
Stephanie Hirtle (F20-29) of Salmon Arm finished first, with a clocking
of 45:22. Alysson Marshall (F16-19) of Enderby ran second in 46:20
followed closely by Allison Dodds (F16-19) of Vernon in 46:27.
Thanks to the Shuswap Hillrunners,
the volunteers and the sponsors.
And a special thanks (and a plug)
to Kumsheen Rafting for the donation of two gift certificates that
were awarded to Trevor and Stephanie for their first place finishes.
As a draw prize I won the same prize last year and spent a day rafting
down the Thompson from Spences Bridge to Lytton a week ago. Great
fun and a great way to experience the Thompson close up. As close
as swimming through some of the rapids, if you care to! Or ride
through some of the rapids sitting on the bow with your feet hanging
over. Dress warm though, unless it's a real hot day, because it's
always windy and you're going to get wet!!
The next race in the series is
the Barn 12K, September
10th in Penticton. The Sandman Hotel is offering rooms, to anyone
attending that race, for $75 per night. They have also offered to
donate $5 to the Interior Running Association for each room booked.
Simply identify yourself as an IRA runner. Again this year, the
title sponsor, The Bike Barn, is donating a mountain bike as the
grand prize draw. And too, Kumsheen Rafting has donated a day pass.

2006 Canadian Tire Interior
Road Series Nine Race Scoring
The scoring has been updated. Please check
your scoring. The most common scoring error occurs
when a runner is entered in a race with a different name spelling
which results in two scoring entries. Runners with only one race
have been dropped from the scoring so it's possible that this error
could result in a race not being scored.

In the women's division, Heather
Price of Canmore (F45-49) came in first with a time of 52:11. Sarah
Newton of Revelstoke came second (53:39) with Caroline Raine of
Kelowna close behind in 53:59.
Thanks to the Revelstoke Alpine
Runners, the volunteers and the sponsors for putting together another
great event. And thanks to all that attended. Participation was
up by roughly 25% over 2005.
The next race in the series
is the the Raven Run 10K

up at other series races, including Coalmont last week, so Revelstoke
isn't all that distant! Organize some group travel plans and help
support this race.
Note that the Raven Run date is
not August 13th as shown in the race booklet, the date has been
changed to the following Sunday.
And a non series race to mention.
The Dave Jacobs Classic will be held in Williams Lake on June 25th.
It is a 20 km run or you can do it as a relay (4 x 5km, 2 x 10km).
There is also the opportunity to walk or run 10 km. More info at

Coalmont to Princeton results
Results for the Coalmont
to Princeton have been posted.
The cool showery weather made for
near ideal conditions for what is arguably the toughest race of
the Series. (Not my pick for that one ... it does follow the river
down to Princeton doesn't it!)
Hans Aabye of Merritt took first
with a time of 1:10:12. Chris Torrie of Vernon finished second (1:11:55)
while Jack Miller of Cache Creek, running in the 60-64 age category,
finished third in 1:16:06. Congratulations to Jack for a remarkable
run. That time ranks as 11th best overall, for this race, going
back to 2001. Also, as far back as the website archives indicate,
no one in the 60+ age category has ever finished third or better
overall in any series road race.
In the women division Kerry
Haaheim of Kelowna finished first with a clocking of 1:22:46. Avery
Saunders of Kamloops was second in 1:27:44 and Lynda Proce of Vernon
finished third in 1:32:19.
Thanks to the Tulameen Sports Club, the sponsors
and volunteers for another successful event.
And thanks to the Princeton 4H Club for putting on
their post race pancake breakfast.
The next race in the series
is the Midsummer 8K, July

America's Running Routes
Check this site out!
http://www.usatf.org/routes/map/
It allows you to zoom into your
neighbourhood and then use a drawing tool to map your favourite running
route. As you map, it accurately records the distance. Once you've
mapped it you can save it, (please do that) to the database so that
other runners can search for and access the mapped routes of a particular
town or region.
The initial map at the site is the
U.S. (You may have to scroll down to locate the map.) Use the tool
provided to drag the map so the interior of B.C. is at the centre.
Then slide the zoom bar to zoom into the area you wish to map. At
near maximum zoom road and street names will appear. Select the drawing
tool and mouse click each corner and a line showing distance will
connect your dots.
